Did you know that ...

The first insurance company was established in England in 1680?

The first insurance was generated by the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Given its three-6 content, the year 1666 was perceived by many as apocalyptic. For 4 days, from September 2 to September 6, the Londoners believed that the Apocalypse had arrived. The Great Fire that unfolded during those days brought Hell on Earth, and many Londoners saw the Fire as the Avenging Fire that God had brought unto people to cleanse them from their sins.

Although only eight people lost their lives in this massive deflagration which was the Great Fire of London of 1666, it destroyed three quarters of Great Britain’s Capital City, i.e. 13,200 houses burnt down. During the 5 days of ravage, the fire spread out of control and all London’s public security system’s shortcomings came into the open. When the disaster ended and the rebuilding works began, the London of today was born, and the first city fire department was established, as was the first building security office, opened by Nicholas Barbon.

In 1680 Nicholas Barbon established the first private fire insurance company in England - “The Fire Office”. He thus became the “Father of fire insurance”.

In Romania, insurance only arrived 200 years later. To be more exact, the first insurance company was established in March 1871 and it was called "Dacia". The company’s share capital was 3 million, and it had 9 founding members: B. Boerescu, T.F. Negroponte, G. Gh. Cantacuzino, Menelas Ghermani, Th. Mehedinteanu, St. Ioanide, C. Deroussi, V.C. Porumbaru, and Alexandru Zissu, renowned personalities of the political, social, and economic life of that time.
